Banana + toffee = banoffee. The pie was created in 1971 at the Hungry Monk restaurant in the English village of Jevington. When supermarkets later sold it as an 'American pie', the owner offered £10,000 to anyone who could prove it wasn't English.

French chef Auguste Escoffier created Peach Melba at London's Savoy Hotel in 1892 or 1893 to honour Australian soprano Nellie Melba, then starring at Covent Garden.

New Zealanders love feijoas so much that many think they are a Kiwi fruit, but they come from the highlands of southern Brazil and Uruguay. Plants taken from Uruguay to France in 1890 later reached California and then New Zealand.

Goulash is named after the cowboys who cooked it: gulyás is Hungarian for 'cattle herder'. It began as a herdsmen's stew on the Great Hungarian Plain; the paprika that colours it only reached Europe in the 1500s. In Hungary, it's a soup.
📍 Huddersfield, England
Rugby league was born on 29 August 1895 at the George Hotel in Huddersfield, when 22 northern English clubs broke away so they could pay players for wages lost to Saturday matches.

Smithereens comes from Irish smidirín, 'a tiny fragment', from smiodar, 'fragment', plus the Irish diminutive -ín, the same ending as in colleen. It turns up in English in the early 1800s.
📍 Tuscany (Pisa–Florence), Italy
Spectacles appeared in Tuscany around 1290: in a 1306 sermon a Pisan friar said the art of making them was not yet 20 years old. The tale that Marco Polo saw glasses in China is a myth; Chinese sources say they were imported.
