Bayou sounds French and reached English through Louisiana French in the 1760s, but it began as bayuk, a Choctaw word for a creek or small stream. Houston, Texas, is nicknamed the Bayou City.

Anorak comes from Greenlandic anoraq, a hooded, waterproof jacket. English adopted it in 1924, and by the 1980s British slang also used it for a socially awkward nerd.
