Germany's national card game was invented around 1810 in Altenburg, south of Leipzig, by members of a local Tarock club. They blended the local game Schafkopf with Tarock and l'Hombre, using a pack of just 32 cards.

In 1922 Ralph Samuelson, aged 18, became the first recorded water skier, on Lake Pepin at Lake City, Minnesota. After trying barrel staves and snow skis, he made his own skis from pine boards and was towed by a motorboat.
📍 Stockholm archipelago (Utö to Sandhamn), Sweden
Swimrun began with a bar bet in 2002 on the island of Utö in Sweden's Stockholm archipelago: four friends raced to Sandhamn, swimming from island to island and running across each one. In 2006 the challenge became the ÖtillÖ race, Swedish for "island to island".
📍 London (Crufts at Olympia), England
Dog agility began as interval entertainment at the 1978 Crufts dog show in London, with dogs racing round a course modelled on horse show jumping. It became a proper competition at Crufts in 1980.

📍 Guisachan estate, Scottish Highlands, UK
The golden retriever is a Highlander. In 1868, at his Guisachan estate, Sir Dudley Marjoribanks mated a yellow retriever called Nous with a Tweed Water Spaniel called Belle, and their four yellow pups founded the breed.

Carpaccio was created at Harry's Bar in Venice by Giuseppe Cipriani for a countess whose doctors had told her to avoid cooked meat. He named the paper-thin raw beef after Vittore Carpaccio, a Venetian painter known for his rich reds.
📍 Taranto, Italy
The name comes from Taranto in southern Italy, home of a wolf spider whose bite was popularly blamed for 'tarantism', a frenzy said to be cured by dancing. English later gave the name to big hairy American spiders.
