Snow snake is a winter game of the Haudenosaunee and other Great Lakes peoples: players hurl polished wooden "snakes" with weighted tips down a long icy trough of snow. Haudenosaunee tradition says it is more than 500 years old.

The diabolo began in China as the kongzhu ('empty bamboo'), whose hollow bamboo cups whistled as they spun on a string. It reached Europe in the 1790s, but the devilish name 'diabolo' only arrived in the early 1900s, with a craze.

Pesäpallo was created by Finnish athlete Lauri 'Tahko' Pihkala, who mixed an old Finnish bat-and-ball game with American baseball. The first match was played in Helsinki in 1920, and the pitcher throws the ball straight up.

In bagh-chal, "moving tigers" in Nepali, one player has four tigers and the other twenty goats. The tigers win by jumping over and capturing five goats; the goats win by hemming the tigers in so they cannot move.

Hip hop was born on 11 August 1973 at a back-to-school party in a Bronx apartment block. Jamaican-born DJ Kool Herc played two copies of the same record on two turntables to stretch out the drum break the dancers loved.

Corn was bred about 9,000 years ago from a wild grass called teosinte in Mexico's Balsas River valley. It was domesticated only once, then spread throughout the Americas.

Not Alpine at all: toboggan reached English in 1829 through Canadian French tabagane, from an Algonquian word for a sled, such as Mi'kmaq topaghan. These flat wooden sleds hauled loads across the snow.
