Whence is a free browser game. There are no accounts, purchases or subscriptions. We may change, pause or end the game or any of its modes at any time.

Origin stories are researched carefully and every item links to a source, but history is messy: some origins are simplified, debated, or may contain mistakes. Whence is made for fun and learning, not as a reference work. Spotted an error? Tell us using the details in the Impressum.

Photos come from Wikimedia Commons and are in the public domain or released under CC0. Map data comes from Natural Earth (public domain).

Your progress is stored only in your browser, so we cannot restore it if site data is cleared or the device is lost. Do not misuse the site, for example by trying to disrupt it or by scraping it in bulk.

Whence is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind to the extent permitted by law.
