Whence

Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 3, 2026

Whence is a free daily geography game that runs in your browser. It is built to know as little about you as possible.

What we collect

For the single-player games: nothing. Whence has no accounts, no cookies, no analytics, no advertising and no trackers. The multiplayer games, which you choose to play, are described below.

Where your data lives

Your results, streaks, high scores, stamps and settings are saved only in your browser’s local storage, on this device. They are never sent to us. Clearing your browser’s site data for Whence deletes them (and the random multiplayer id).

Hosting

Whence is hosted by Vercel Inc. When you open the site, your browser necessarily sends technical data such as your IP address, browser type and the page requested. Vercel processes this on our behalf only to deliver the site and keep it secure, and may keep it briefly in server logs. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in running a secure website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Vercel may process this data in the USA; see Vercel’s privacy policy.

Photos

Item photos are public-domain or CC0 images loaded directly from Wikimedia Commons (upload.wikimedia.org). To show them, your browser connects to the Wikimedia Foundation’s servers, which receive your IP address and browser details. See the Wikimedia Foundation’s privacy policy.

Multiplayer (friends rooms, duels, daily leaderboard)

Only when you open a friends room or a duel, or choose to join the daily leaderboard, your browser talks to our game server. It sends a random player id created on your device, the name and avatar you play under (in duels and on the leaderboard always a generated name like “Brave Kiwi”), and your pins and points. No account, email address or other personal detail is involved.

The game server is run for us by Convex, Inc. in the European Union (Ireland). Rooms and duels are deleted within about six hours, leaderboard entries after about 45 days. The legal basis is providing the game you asked to play (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). See Convex’s privacy policy.

Fonts and maps

Fonts and map data are served from our own host. Your browser makes no requests to Google or other font or map services.

Your rights (GDPR)

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection, and the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. Because we keep no personal data about you ourselves, there is usually nothing for us to look up: your game data stays in your hands, on your device. For any privacy question, contact us using the details in the Impressum.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with an updated date.
